Artist’s statement

I enjoy creating digital art that is sometimes quite dark, but other times colorful and childish. Either way, art still functions as my outlet. As someone who was practically born with a controller in hand, my art is highly inspired by my time spent playing video games. My favorite game series are the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series. Those games made me fall in love with storytelling and branching narratives. I also draw inspiration from games that utilize pixel art such as Stardew Valley and older Pokémon games. I admire the art style as it can convey so much in its simplicity.

I have been working on creating a black and white pixel indie game called Monochrome hearts. while working on this game i have made various game assets and animations all while relying on a black white and gray color scheme. Ideally it will be a dating simulator with various minigames and dialogue choices. When I look at it, it brings me back to when I was a kid and used to play flash games on school computers when I was bored. A lot of new games coming out feel like lifeless cash grabs, and I believe it is important to make games that serve a purpose beyond monetary value.

In some of my graphic design work I experiment with depth and colors. I feel just as comfortable working with bright colors as I do limiting myself to black and white. While my time in college has led me to explore more traditional methods, I feel most myself when creating digital art. But experimenting with different art forms has helped me narrow down my interests and figure out more about myself.

My battle with my anxiety is a big part of who I am, and it is the reason I reach for human connection through my artform. I think the most meaningful thing art can do, is relate to someone. If someone sees their selves within my indie game or another piece of mine, then it has done its intended job.

I think if you were to look at all my artworks together you wouldn’t find a common theme. Instead, you’d see a chaotic picture of my search for identity. And I hope to continue that search throughout my future work.
